Grill'd Subiaco

Burgers are everywhere in Perth, so how does a place stand out from the crowd? 2 for 1 gets my attention right away.

This was the first time we had tried Grill'd in Subiaco before, we have been many a time to both the Mt Lawley & the Claremont outlets, however Subi had passed us by until now.

Sitting where the old Cino to go was, as is the Mt Lawley one, the location is great. Located at the Subiaco train station, Grill'd has easy access and some great parking close by. The layout is nice, indoor and outside tables that don't feel too cramped up.

Ordering was easy, choose the burger from the clipboard menus and choose your bun. Mrs Mac went the Bombay Bliss on a traditional bun, while I tried the Moroccan Lamb on the Panini style bun. A serve of chips on the side to share with the herb dipping sauce rounded out our order. The 2 for 1 is great value, with the average price of the burgers at around $12.

You can view your order taking shape through the clear counter and see how your burger is progressing. Thankfully ours didn't take very long as I was a little on the hungry side.

Both burgers came out fresh and hot. Chips were delicious, cut into a nice sizes that weren't too fat as some chunky can be. The herb sauce is a must try with these as the chips are lightly sprinkled with a herb seasoning.

Burgers were both great, neither sloppy or overfilled with ingredients. Mrs Mac commented on how this was the first burger not to fall apart before she got to the end. The Moroccan lamb was nice, however I felt the lamb could have had a little more seasoning on it.

As we were leaving the line was out the door as the football had just finished, so get in early if its game night.

Sail & Anchor

An old favourite of mine for many years to grab a beer or two. Having not been here for a meal for the longest time it was great to see the Sail & Anchor in the Entertainment Book offering a 25% off the entire bill.

The menu is interesting, not a lot in the way of mains, mainly tapas style share plates, with a few staples like steak and chicken parmigiana. The beer selection is huge, as is the offering of wine per glass.

It was a tough decision between getting the pre-selected Beer Lovers tapas for $40 or making a selection from the large range of share offerings. We chose the Beer Lovers plate then at the last minute deciding to make our own selections from the Share section of the menu.

Our selection got as high as 6 dishes, however we soon realised our eyes were bigger than our stomach. The short list came down to the marinated fetta, tasmanian salmon & spring onion fish cakes with chilli dipping sauce, spanish tortilla with smokey cheddar & side of chutney & from the "on the stick" section the lamb koftas with minted yoghurt. To wash it all down a pint of Feral Brewery Karma Citra & a glass of Penfolds Koonunga Hill Cab Sauv.

Ordering is done at the front bar, drinks are included in the 25% off deal and are poured on ordering and paying for the meal. We sat out in the back courtyard, even though it was cool evening the gas heaters around the courtyard keep the area nice and comfortable.

Waiting for our dishes to arrive, we had a glance around what others were getting, the steaks looked great, huge rectangular plates overflowing with food.

Our selection arrived promptly, hot and looking very delicious. We were given two small plates to enjoy the dishes on.

The marinated fetta came in a glass jar and a very light oil. The fetta was delicious and I had a lot of trouble not just eating it all at once. Spanish tortilla with smokey cheddar & side of chutney was our favourite. The chutney was delicious and a perfect match to the tortilla. The tasmanian salmon & spring onion fish cakes with chilli dipping sauce were nicely made, not too soft and very easy to pull apart to dip into the sauce. My second favourite dish was the lamb koftas with minted yoghurt nicely spiced with a delicious yoghurt to dip into.

Four dishes were just right for Mrs Mac and myself, I am glad we skipped the grilled chorizo with fresh lemon on this outing as it would have been just that little too much. A good excuse to go back again and try the other dishes on the menu.

Definitely a great place to go with family or friends. There was a nice vibe there on the Friday we went, with many families and smaller groups enjoying a relaxing night.

Our Year With The Entertainment Book

Welcome to our journal. Originally this blog only covered Perth, however we have expanded our book usage to various various parts of Australia.

We are now using the digital version of the Entertainment book. Initially the app was totally unreliable, with constant freezing and wiping of user accounts right at the moment you wanted to redeem. It's not perfect, but it's a lot better than it was. Having the app has increased our chances of using the Entertainment book during unplanned outings.
